Hello. I am a designer. Nice to meet you.

Cover Letter

Hello.

I’ve had a passion for design ever since I started creating things in the early 90’s. From album art to guitars to snowboards, I was in love with design. Now, after two degrees in architecture, and after working for some of the world’s largest and best tech companies, I’m still in love with designing, building, planning, and creating.

I am currently working as the head of Visual & Motion Design at Samsung Research America in Mountain View, CA for the Customer Experience Lab, managing a team of ten designers. I am helping to drive key advances in user experience for all of Samsung’s television and home products. While working at Samsung, I have contributed to many projects ranging from the core shipping product “Smart TV” to more future thinking products and services. I have added value to each project with a range of responsibilities including: information architecture, interaction design, management, visual design, motion design, lightweight prototyping, animation, concepts, presentations, and demos, and I also still help out as an individual contributor. In addition, I have worked as a Project Lead for a few key R&D projects. I really enjoy working on challenging problems and collaborating closely with all kinds of coworkers.

Previously, I worked for Sony Electronics as a Visual and Interaction Designer for nearly five years. I played an integral role on the design and engineering implementation for several of Sony's key products including the Bravia Television lineup, the Sony eInk Reader, and other mobile devices and software. My responsibilities included concept work, asset production, specification documentation and animation/interactive prototyping.

Before Sony, I was a Digital Supervisor, 2D / 3D Artist, and Junior Architect with several years of design experience. I was the head of the art department for No Good Television, a Beverly Hills based internet and broadcast production startup, and for a several years I played an integral role in the management and expansion of this department. My responsibilities there included: talent acquisition, project organization/management, and contribution for 3D modeling, animation, texturing, lighting, compositing, motion graphics, and 3D / 2D supervision tasks, to name a few. I am highly skilled with various 3D and 2D software platforms including Maya, After Effects, Rhino, Photoshop, Illustrator, AutoCAD, and others.

I obtained my Masters of Arts in Architecture from UCLA and transitioned into visual effects through motion design, and then later I transitioned to interaction design through visual effects. I have a high level of interest in technical issues, and I love solving problems and being presented with new challenges. I have continued to expand my design knowledge through studying tutorials, contact with experienced colleagues, seminars, conferences, and critical observation of relevant work within interaction design, visual effects, and visual design.

I look forward to hearing from you, and I look forward to working with you!

Kind Regards,
Jon
